What Is Breast Implant Health Screening?
Breast implant health screening refers to assessing breast implants for signs of rupture, implant failure, capsular changes, or other implant-related problems.
As breast implants are not lifetime devices, long-term monitoring becomes increasingly important over time.
Patients commonly search:
breast implant check
breast implant ultrasound
implant rupture scan
breast implant health check
implant integrity scan
ultrasound breast implant rupture
Breast implant health screening aims to assess implant integrity rather than breast tissue itself.
This distinction is extremely important.
Do Breast Implants Need Regular Screening?
Breast implants do not automatically require replacement after a fixed number of years.
However, long-term monitoring may be useful because:
implant rupture risk gradually increases over time
capsular contracture risk increases over time
silent rupture may occur without symptoms
patients may develop aesthetic changes gradually
The FDA recommends imaging surveillance for silicone implants beginning approximately 5–6 years after implantation and then every 2–3 years thereafter.
Many patients and surgeons increasingly utilise ultrasound as part of implant monitoring.
What Does Implant Ultrasound Actually Assess?
Breast implant ultrasound primarily assesses:
implant integrity
suspected rupture
implant shell abnormalities
fluid around implants
obvious implant malposition
some capsular abnormalities
Importantly:
Implant ultrasound performed as an implant health check is not designed to replace formal breast imaging or breast cancer screening.
What Does Implant Ultrasound NOT Assess?
Patients should understand implant health checks are not designed to assess:
breast cancer screening
detailed breast tissue assessment
comprehensive breast imaging
complex breast symptoms
all breast lumps
Patients with:
breast lumps
pain
swelling
nipple discharge
new asymmetry
skin changes
persistent symptoms
should still undergo formal breast assessment.
Implant Health Checks Do NOT Replace Breast Screening
This is one of the most important messages.
Breast implant health checks assess implant integrity rather than breast tissue itself.
They do not replace:
national breast screening programmes
mammography
symptomatic breast clinic assessment
formal breast ultrasound performed by breast radiology specialists
Any concerning symptoms still require assessment through appropriate breast pathways.
Dr Ali Arnaout and Implant Health Checks
Dr Ali Arnaout has undertaken training in ultrasound assessment to perform implant health checks focused specifically on implant integrity assessment.
These assessments are designed to:
assess implant integrity
look for obvious implant abnormalities
support long-term implant monitoring
identify patients who may require further investigation
These assessments are not intended to replace formal breast radiology assessment or breast screening services.
Patients with breast symptoms may still require assessment within specialist breast services including further imaging performed by dedicated breast radiologists.
How Accurate Is Ultrasound For Detecting Implant Rupture?
Ultrasound is increasingly used because it is:
accessible
relatively inexpensive
radiation free
dynamic
well tolerated
Published studies report variable performance depending on equipment, operator experience and rupture type.
Many studies report:
Sensitivity: approximately 70–95%
Specificity: approximately 80–95%
This means ultrasound performs well but is not perfect.
False positives and false negatives can occur.
Performance depends heavily upon:
operator experience
implant type
rupture type
patient anatomy
ultrasound quality
Is MRI Better Than Ultrasound?
MRI is generally considered the most sensitive imaging modality for implant rupture.
MRI may be useful when:
ultrasound findings are unclear
rupture remains uncertain
symptoms persist despite normal ultrasound
more detailed imaging is required
MRI is often considered a second-line investigation rather than a first-line investigation for many patients.
When Should Patients Consider Implant Health Checks?
Patients may consider implant health monitoring if:
implants are becoming older
symptoms develop
they are concerned about rupture
aesthetic changes occur
they want reassurance
they have silicone implants
Many patients particularly consider implant monitoring after the 5–10 year mark.
Symptoms That Should Trigger Further Assessment
Patients should seek assessment if they develop:
breast pain
firmness
new asymmetry
swelling
lumps
implant distortion
new rippling
shape change
persistent discomfort
These symptoms may require:
implant assessment
breast imaging
specialist breast review
MRI
further investigation
Can Implant Health Checks Replace Seeing a Breast Specialist?
No.
Patients with symptoms concerning for breast pathology should still be assessed appropriately.
Implant health checks are designed to assess implant integrity.
They are not comprehensive breast imaging examinations.
Patients with concerning symptoms may still require:
breast clinic assessment
breast radiology review
dedicated breast ultrasound
mammography
MRI
The Future of Implant Monitoring
Modern breast surgery increasingly recognises that:
implants require long-term monitoring
rupture may be silent
patients increasingly want reassurance
ultrasound accessibility continues improving
Implant health checks may therefore become increasingly common within long-term breast implant care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can ultrasound detect implant rupture?
Yes. Ultrasound performs well for implant rupture detection but is not perfect.
Does implant ultrasound replace breast screening?
No. Implant health checks assess implant integrity and do not replace formal breast screening or breast imaging.
Do I need MRI if my ultrasound is normal?
Not usually, although MRI may sometimes be required if symptoms persist or ultrasound findings are unclear.
How often should implants be checked?
There is no single universal approach, although many patients consider monitoring increasingly important as implants age.
Are implant health checks looking for breast cancer?
No. Implant health checks primarily assess implant integrity rather than breast tissue.
